I am a 2017 R/V Galileo cruise participant and I have been asked to write an overview of the conditions for making it into our program. My answer is based on what we know (or think we know) about this year’s selection process as well as past years' processes. Note that all of our participants are expected to go through a rigorous training session in Miami during May or June， just prior to departure， where science background is reinforced and updated. All scientific participation is also dependent upon pre-cruise data analysis workshops held at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography in Newport， RI（2 days） in early April as well as a post-cruise analysis workshop held after returning from the cruise in August. Therefore， any discussion of “prerequisites” is somewhat premature until we know more about who will be participating in these upcoming workshops．
In summary， there is no “hard” number one can put forward regarding the likelihood of getting into the i526 program；it depends on too many variables. What follows are my best guesses， based on previous years' programs and feedback from last year's participants.
The first step in the selection process is coming up with a short list of candidates who show strong potential for conducting high level research on board our ship. This list is compiled by our Principal Investigator， Dr. David Sandweiss， and our Scientific Programmer， Dr. Michael O'Neill.
